MAKING YOUR VOICE HEARD.

WE RISE TOGETHER.

Ruth Luevanos is..

a mother, a wife, a teacher, a union leader, an activist, a law school graduate, a scout troop leader, and the first Latina ever elected to the Simi Valley City Council.

Ruth is a tireless advocate for her students and for all young people. She dedicated her life to the belief that there are no lost causes, only unrealized opportunities.

Ruth Luevanos grew up as the fourth of five kids in a rowdy, tight-knit household full of laughter and big dreams.

After completing a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice at George Washington University and earning her Juris Doctor at Loyola Law in Los Angeles, Ruth decided to answer the call to be the bilingual teacher that her community needed.

After teaching underserved students, she realized that her head had been in the courtroom, but her heart was in the classroom. She never looked back.

She continues to rise.

  • Ruth Luevanos has worked at various K-12 schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District for over twenty years where she has collaborated with at-risk students, parents, and communities.

  • She is currently a full-time math, science, and geography teacher at a public middle school in North Hollywood. In addition to having a Master's Degree in Instructional Leadership, being a National Board Certified Teacher, and a former United Teachers of Los Angeles Chapter Chair, she is currently on the UTLA Resolutions Committee, the Equitable Grading and Instruction Champion for her school, a member of the school site council, and a TGI mentor teacher.

  • As a former board member of the California Council for Social Studies who chaired the Committee for Diversity and Social Justice, she continues to guide, support, and mentor other K-12 teachers, provides professional development, write grants, gives parent workshops, and encourage other teachers to become National Board Certified teachers.
  • She has presented at several state and national conferences including the National Council for Social Studies, the California Council for Social Studies, the National Council for Geography Education, and the American Education Research Association.

  • She is currently the Co-Chair of the Instructional Community of the National Council for Social Studies.

  • It is the students, not the titles, that bring meaning and joy to Ruth's work. She found her calling working in K-12 Title I schools and her students inspire her to imagine a better and brighter future for our communities and our country. By mentoring youth and her fellow educators she believes that we can all rise together to lift up everybody especially those who have not had a voice.

“Instead of adding more to the district, we need to expand on what we already have. Listen to the students and teachers on what they need to succeed.”

For Ruth, home is still a bustling, vibrant place: Ruth lives with her husband and her mother-in-law. She has a steady stream of friends from school and activist work, and one moderately well-behaved dog.

Her two children are now off at college, so she understands what it means to have children advancing their education. She also understands what needs to be available to make college a success.

A true progressive, Ruth believes a well-funded and well-supported public education and knows it takes a village to make that happen. She knows that education is an investment for the entire community and that students need to be safe, supported and have access to classes. Professors need to be able to teach the entire scope of classes their students need to graduate, and the community needs community colleges that meet their needs which have shifted since the pandemic.

What does that mean for you?

Students:

  • Having a working functioning cafeteria on all campuses

  • Expanding social/emotional support

  • Hands-on academic counseling

  • More class availability

  • Making sure Instructors have support on campus.

  • Increase graduation rates

  • Hiring more instructors for classes to be offered

Community:

  • Informing the public about available programs

  • Bringing an educator outlook to this seat.

  • Bridging to gap in this space in post covid world
